Hi Leslie, In Spain people use the phrase a lot, to mean absolutely nothing - it's a way of adding emphasis to just plain old 'nada', so you might hear 'no tengo nada, nada de nada'.

As a kid in California (40+ yrs. ago) my Hispanic (then called Chicano) friends taught me that 'nada de nada' meant in slang that when one is out of money, saying 'nada de nada' means you have a whole lot of nothing if someone asks to borrow $$. My kids taking High School Spanish tell me I am wrong, wrong, wrong and give me the text book meanings of the words claiming that this phrase does not make sense slang or otherwise. Are they correct or can I claim validation of my memories? Muchas Gracias from seriously stupid mother.
