Yo creo que es muy importante enseñar un segundo idioma en los colegios. Yo tambieb he leeido que sabiendo mas de una idioma beneficia el cerebro contra demencia y la enfermedad de Alzheimer. Ademas, estoy de acuerdo con Marina que saber otras idiomas le ayudo a uno a no estar isolado de otras culturas. En los EEUU solo enseñan otras idiomas para los que quieren, eso si el colegio tiene cursos de otras idiomas, una lastima.

estoy de acuerdo con ValenciaSon. Aqui en los EEUU, la mayoria de la populacion no saben otro idiomas, y creo que es una lastima porque cuando sabes uno o dos o mas lenguas tienes la mentalidad de muchas culturas y tienes otras formas de pensar. no me gusta que aqui nadie creen que tener dos o mas idiomas son muy importante y si tení­a la plata, yo querí­a mudar

I love reading Spanish comments to podcasts. There are so many new words/idioms to learn. Thanks to Alberto for introducing me to ‘tener la plata’ and ‘mudar’. I suppose I should have written this in Spanish, ……..quizas la proxima vez.

Hola, mi hija acabo de comenzar su primer ano en la escuela secondaria. Ella ha estudiado Japones desde su cuarto ano en escuela primaria y este ano los estudiantes empezaran estudiar Italiano tambien. La razon? De estudiar otras lenguas mejora resultos en casi todo las otras areas de trabajo en la escuela. Si los estudiantes pueden usar estas lenguas mas tarde en sus vidas sera un “bonus”. Mi hija tiene facinacion con los lamborghinis y por eso ya tiene interes en algunos asuntos italianos. Quiero que ella pueda pagar para su coche!!

I think that Spanish will be one of the most important languages in the future. just here in Canada they announced ago month that Spanish is the most growing language, it’s doing better that Mandarin and Arabic.

Primero, lo siento por escribir en inglés. Es debido a todaví­a no puedo expresarme en español.

I’m from the US and when I was growing up it was mandatory in my school district to take a second language. In sixth grade we were introduced to one quarter of Spanish and one of French. The following year we had to choose one or the other. Once we entered high school we continued for at least another two years, but were given the additional options of German and Latin. I took French 7th through 12th grade as well as one semester of Latin. I continued French in college for one year (which also had a minimum language requirement). I also participated in a one-month home stay in France when I was in 11th grade.

So while many Americans claim they can’t speak a second language, the majority of them were required to take a second language in school. And tens of thousands of American students study abroad each year.

Anyway, I only wish I had taken Spanish instead of French. Me encanta México y música latina. Por eso, estoy estudiando español en Varsovia donde vivo ahora. ¡Qué raro!

in czech they say ‘kolik reciznas, tolikrat jsi clovekem’, which is a real challenge to translate, but means something like: however many languages you speak is how many times you are a person. perhaps best translated by the expression provided above by Marie-Claude. of course the imagery is different, which is what makes expressions so tricky.

just to weigh in on the languages in america question (since i cant speak for the UK), i took spanish for five years and actually got pretty good at it but lost interest in college when the only place to go with studying was more and more literature. it seemed so detached. i think the responsibility is on teachers to make the language relevant, or make students realize its relevance. for me spanish became strictly academic. and that’s the huge problem in the US- you dont really need to speak a foreign language. i hope that as the profile and cultural visibility of immigrants increase in our country increases, so will americans’ desire to learn their languages. there is a need to communicate with these people, as they’re a part of our communities. hopefully in the future they’ll be more so and not less.
and the internet has obviously revolutionized (or is in the process of revolutionizing) language learning. similarly it will be up to teachers to take advantage of these opportunities to bolster students’ motivation. let the days of grammar lessons leave us for good! long live podcasts!

Es importante saber otros idiomas. El planeta que habitamos es se está encogiendo (no literalmente), más y más personas de diferentes culturas y latitudes están en contacto a través del mundo de los negocios, se comunican por medio de una computadora o en los congresos mundiales. El inglés solo ya no basta para comunicarse en este mundo, debemos saber otros idiomas como el español o el chino que son los otros dos idiomas que más se hablan.
Es una lástima que los que están a cargo de los Departamentos o Ministerios de Educación de las diferentes naciones no tengan esto claro. A la postre sus propios paí­ses van a sufrir las consecuencias.

Yo creo que es fundamental dominar otros idiomas, para abrir horizontes. Tenia un tiempo que estudié con ahí­nco el inglés, y via las pelí­culas sin leer leyedas, estoy intentando hacer la misma cosa con español, mas para mí­ el inglés fue más fácil, por eso estoy dedicando más tiempo para el español.

Es imporante enseñar segundos idiomas en escuelas. Según psicología, es más fácil los enseñar gente joven que gente vieja. Si una persona tenía un edad como diecisiete años o más, sería difícil aprender un segundo idioma. Español es mi segundo idioma. Lo encuentro ser difícil hablar. Lo encuentro ser diveritido escribir. Necesito practicar el arte de hablar. Lo encuentro español muy interestante. Todos aprendan un segundo idioma.

Que esta diciendo?!?! Eres loco? toda via necesita hablar otras lenguajes en los EEUU. Hara mas y mas oportunidades en que la gente do otros paises pueden ir aqui y traer sus idiomas tambien. creo que como mucha la gente que espanol un dia sea la lenguaje mas importante del mundo. solo estoy en espanol cuatro y ya estoy en la escuela secondaria y puedo usar el espanol todos los dias, y vivo en Illinois!
